The Period Solidarity Initiative
The Impact of Period Poverty
Period poverty significantly impacts the education and personal development of orphaned girls, often resulting in school absenteeism and dropout rates. Girls in lower-income areas face considerable challenges in managing menstruation, which can lead to severe consequences, including depression, delinquency, and even engagement in transactional sex to afford sanitary products. Recognizing this critical issue, the Green Companion Initiative is dedicated to addressing period poverty in rural Kampala, Uganda as a means of promoting educational equality.
Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Menstrual Health
One of our key strategies for combating period poverty involves teaching girls to make reusable menstrual pads from local materials in our community. This initiative not only reduces the financial burden of purchasing modern sanitary pads but also promotes sustainability and self-sufficiency. By empowering girls with this knowledge, we enable them to manage their menstrual health affordably and sustainably, ensuring they can attend school with dignity and confidence.
We travel to the slums of rural Kampala, Uganda, to promote menstrual health and hygiene practices, provide menstrual pads, and deliver educational trainings to women and girls. We conduct outreach with other local community groups to support young mothers or pregnant women to care for their children, and provide Mama Kits, equipped with medical and sanitary supplies.
We also run a Village Health Worker training program, with curriculum designed by Green Companion Initiative in collaboration with tutors from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Sports. This course has graduated more than 300 Village Health Team members to support menstrual health and reproductive education to local communities.
This innovative approach helps break the cycle of poverty and enhances educational and economic mobility opportunities for orphaned girls, allowing them to focus on their studies rather than worrying about menstrual hygiene. By integrating support for menstrual health with our STEM education programs, we create a comprehensive framework for empowering these girls to become leaders in their communities.
Through the theme "Women and Children: Empowering Women and Children as Stewards of Change," the Green Companion Initiative is committed to creating a transformative impact that nurtures the potential of women and orphaned girls. By combining STEM education with innovative solutions to combat period poverty, we are addressing immediate challenges while fostering a generation of leaders dedicated to environmental sustainability and social equity. This holistic approach is essential for building a sustainable future where every individual has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to their community and the environment.
